Close House, with a rich history dating back nearly 800 years to the early 13th century, was initially established in 1779 for the exclusive use of the Bewicke family. Originally owned by the Turpin and Read families, the property eventually came into the possession of Robert Bewicke in 1626, marking the beginning of a long association between the Bewicke family and Close House.
The current Close House mansion, a Georgian-style masterpiece, was constructed in 1779 for Calverley and Mary Bewicke, replacing the old monastic house on the site. Possibly designed by William Newton, the mansion features a symmetrical layout, with notable architectural details such as ionic columns, a pediment, and a grand bay window marking the location of the former monastic house.
Over the years, the estate changed hands multiple times, serving various purposes, including as a Nursing Training College during World War II. In 1953, it was sold at auction to James Rutherford and Sons before being purchased by King’s College Newcastle in 1960.
In 2004, local businessman Sir Graham Wylie acquired Close House mansion and the golf course, initiating its transformation into a premier destination in the North East of England. Close House has evolved into a luxurious retreat offering top-notch facilities, including conferences, meetings and world-class golf experiences, all just a short distance from Newcastle City Centre.
